Bylaws and Policies
This Town Is Small is committed to being transparent and open. Please see below our organization’s Bylaws and Code of Conduct. This Town Is Small also has a Policy Handbook that is currently being updated; Our Accessibility Policy is available below (soon to be updated, to reflect our move to a permanent space).
ACCESSIBILITY POLICY
If you have any questions, or suggestions on how we could improve our accessibility policy, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@thistownissmall.com.
PHYSICAL SPACE
This Town Is Small (TTIS) artist-run centre is committed to creating spaces that are as physically accessible as possible for all members of the arts community.
TTIS is located at the Hilda Woolnough Gallery at The Guild. The venue’s front left door on Queen Street has an automatic door opener button, and staff operate an elevator lift to provide accessible movement between the lobby and the gallery level downstairs.
There are two gender neutral washrooms: one inside the gallery, which is accessed via a narrow hallway, and a second located behind the gallery, which has a wider corridor, more space, and grab bars.
An Access Station is located at the gallery entrance, stocked with sensory tools and toys designed to support a positive experience for neurodivergent and neurotypical visitors alike.
We also have occasional programming at different venues across the province. We are attentive to the accessibility barriers of our affiliated venues and will publish detailed accessibility notes whenever advertising an event, exhibition, or other activity.
Our staff are trained to provide assistance during your visit, or e-mail Lisa with accessibility questions at director@thistownissmall.com
WASHROOMS
TTIS will publish notes on washroom availability for the relevant venues whenever advertising an event, exhibition, or other activity. TTIS will prioritize venues that offer gender-neutral washroom facilities or work with collaborating venues to provide gender-neutral washrooms during TTIS events.
ALLERGIES
As a public space, TTIS cannot guarantee our locations are free of allergens. We discourage staff, board, volunteers, and guests from using scented products, or bringing in food and non-service animals that are known to be allergens.
LANGUAGE
While the working language of TTIS is English, TTIS will make every effort to accommodate requests in French, but has limited capacity that is dependent on the language ability of the current staff and board of directors.
YOUTH
TTIS welcomes children of all ages. It is the responsibility of parents and guardians to ensure that the current programming or event is appropriate for their child.
ALCOHOL
TTIS does have programming that is dry and for all ages, however, opening receptions or evening events may have alcohol on-site. Whether a space is wet or dry will be specified whenever advertising an event or activity.
FINANCIAL ACCESS
Admission to TTIS venues during open hours is completely free, and we also facilitate many free events. Some of our events may also be pay-what-you-can (PWYC) entry, specifically for ticketed events or events hosted by other organizations through collaboration. By including a PWYC option we hope to allow individuals and patrons from all financial backgrounds to attend our events. Our intention is that there be as few barriers in entering our gallery and event spaces as possible.
ONLINE ACCESSIBILITY
TTIS aims to improve online accessibility on our website and social media by taking comprehensive steps in the future with this document as a guideline for our goals. We strive to foster accessible platforms throughout our web presence. This includes the use of clear language throughout our social media posts, newsletters, and website to convey information in a way that is comprehensible and accurate. In order to ensure the ability for anyone to engage with our content without difficulty, we will include image descriptions alongside photos that we post across all of our platforms, in addition to Alt Text where available.
SAFER SPACES
TTIS will not tolerate any instance of discrimination or violent acts, which include but are not limited to racism, white supremacy, sexism, heterosexism, cissexism/transmisogyny, ableism, ageism, sizeism, sexualized and all acts of violence and harassment. This policy is always in effect and we are dedicated to creating spaces that are as safe and welcoming as possible.
