Sofia Cervantes Romero is a contemporary abstract painter based in Epekwitk, Prince Edward Island. During Test Press, Sofia intends to advance her practice by experimenting with subtle colour palettes in a large-scale painting. Her inspiration comes from romantic notions of the sublime and a dream of the moon. As a part of the project, Sofia hopes to create a space that stirs a sense of awe and wonder. She encourages visitors to enter the space and respond to prompt questions meant to incite reflection and capture the ideas, emotions, and images emerging from the audience’s imagination.

Derrick Carl is a queer nonbinary genderfluid person from Epekwitk (PE). They are an interdisciplinary artist and use mediums such as collage, photography and videography, poetry and performance art. Derrick Carl is currently exploring themes of queer subjectivity, relationships and rituals, experiences of the erotic and the natural world. She is also a drag performer named Remedy, and an experienced producer of events and facilitator of workshops for audiences of all ages. They currently work with PEERS Alliance and volunteer as the Board Chair of Gender Affirming Care Prince Edward Island.

Carlie Howell is a musician, video artist, curator and arts worker based in rural Epekwitk (PEI). Their creative work explores the intersections between jazz, folk, classical and Brazilian music, and has the principles of improvisation and co-creation at its core. They perform their original music under their own name, as well as with The Electric Storm Collective. Their video work explores musical form using projection mapping. As a curator, they work to elevate the voices of feminized and queer musicians. A social justice accomplice, and advocate for artists, Carlie has been working in recent years to help musicians achieve safer, more sustainable working conditions.

Test Press is an artistic development opportunity for artists to use the gallery for self-directed experimentation. It is a celebration of trying new things, embracing failure, fine-tuning ideas, and testing new approaches. Throughout the months of September and October, participating artists will utilise the space to create new work, explore new processes, conduct research, and more!
