This Town Is Small is an artist-run centre committed to supporting contemporary art on Prince Edward Island and operates from the Hilda Woolnough Gallery at The Guild.
The Communications & Gallery Assistant will work closely with the Executive Director to welcome visitors to the gallery as well as maintain and update the TTIS website, social media channels, and monthly newsletters. There will be occasional additional design work for both digital and print materials. Communications and design tasks will be completed during gallery hours alongside public facing responsibilities, with workload adjusted based on exhibition and event schedules. Training will be provided to support the successful candidate in learning existing routines and procedures.
Work Schedule: Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10:00am-5:00pm (12 hours per wk, plus a 1 hour unpaid lunch break)
responsibilities
Gallery Support
Perform opening and closing duties including locking/unlocking the gallery for opening hours (12:00pm-5:00pm), turning on and off works in the exhibition; keeping the gallery and restroom areas tidy; and replenishing pamphlets, publications, and other gallery ephemera as needed
Examine the exhibitions on a daily basis, identifying any malfunctioning or damaged artwork, and informing the appropriate staff in a timely manner
Welcoming visitors and providing information about the exhibitions and the organization during opening hours on Wednesdays and Thursday, from noon - 5pm
Communications & Promotion
Maintain and update the TTIS website and social media channels, including approximately 2-3 pre-scheduled social media posts per week and occasional website updates for exhibitions and events
Prepare a monthly email newsletter using existing templates and content
Support clear and consistent messaging aligned with TTIS’s mandate and values
Graphic Design
Prepare graphics for social media and web platforms
Design occasional printed materials in conjunction with exhibitions and events (e.g., posters, pamphlets, wall texts), approximately every 1-2 months
qualifications
Experience in Customer Service, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, or Communications, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with strong attention to detail
Reliable and punctual, with the ability to consistently attend scheduled shifts
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Comfortable with public-facing duties such as welcoming visitors and discussing current exhibitions and artists
Comfortable performing light physical tasks such as setting up the gallery, maintaining cleanliness, and handling printed materials
Proficiency with basic office and design software (e.g., Google Drive, Mailchimp, Canva, Squarespace or similar platforms), or a strong ability to learn
Experience working with artists, exhibitions, or arts programming considered a strong asset
